We are still alive here in Arizona, so I thought I would post a few pictures to prove it. I have not been on my blog (or any blog) for months now, so sorry--I will try to do better! Here are some random pics from the last few months. The fifth kid must have taken up all my time I used to spend on my blog! (And then some!) Hope you are all doing well!

Madison Kay joined our family this week on the 10th. She was 6 pounds 7 ounces and 19 inches long. She was born at 6:56 p.m., and everything went well.

I still can't believe I am the mother of 5 kids, but we are so excited to have her here! She has lots of dark hair, which reminds me of Andrea as a baby, but she looks the most like Tyler to me. The kids couldn't come to the hospital because of the flu season, so these pictures are the first time they saw her and held her. She is 2 days old today!

Tyler was happy to see her. When I called and talked to him from the hospital, he asked me, "So mom, are you having a good time?" I wasn't sure how to answer that (who has a good time at the hospital?), so I told him I was enjoying baby Madison.

Thanksgiving weekend

So now that the weather has cooled, we FINALLY took Kara out to learn to ride a 2 wheeler. She was very excited and picked it up very quickly. Jason was outside with the kids Thanksgiving morning, so I could make the few things I was bringing to Thanksgiving dinner. We had a great meal at Jason's brothers house, and we were so glad to spend some time with their family! (Thanks, Melissa!!!)

Thanksgiving evening the three older kids drove up and stayed with Grandpa Judd in Tuba City. Then Friday morning they went and picked out a Christmas tree. Tyler got pricked by a jumping cactus. While Jason and grandpa took out the needles, he looked up and said between tears, "You know what, Grandpa? It sure is tough being a cowboy." They laughed out loud at that (not sure where he got that in his head). This is the tree they picked. Yes, it doesn't look very big. But when Jason got home he read the little pamphlet they got with the tags which stated "remember that trees look smaller in the forest than they do in your home." As a result, this is the biggest tree we have ever had!

Here is Ashley playing with the kids nativity set (Fisher Price). She LOVES Christmas already and she hasn't even figured out the present part of it yet!

Here is the end result of the tree! Since I was no help, it took Jason a few hours to get it up. We had to switch corners, since it was too tall for the first one we put it in. You may notice there are a lot more ornaments on the bottom--the kids did most the decorating and dad could barely reach the top! But it is done and it is beautiful!

Here are our stockings hanging in a row. Ashley is looking up at hers. Yes, we do have one for baby this year since she will come before Christmas. The hardest part to believe is that we have SEVEN stockings...when did we have that many kids???

Now we are ready for baby and for Christmas. I finished up shopping and wrapping (except a few online orders) while the kids were gone with dad. Now I just need to pack my hospital bag....I'm not due for 2 1/2 weeks--I have time, right?

Gingerbread houses

Jason's family tradition is to decorate gingerbread houses together. So we made them FROM SCRATCH (dough Monday, baked and cut Wednesday, and decorated Saturday). Andrea designed all o fit. I just put the frosting on and helped "glue" it all together. For our first time, I thought it turned out just great!

This was a week long, but really fun, project for Andrea and me to do together. We had a great time with the girls in Jason's family too and I learned A LOT from all of them! Thanks to the Judd's for a very memorable day!!

Here are my kids with Andrea's Oreo Fudge Brownie cake!

Andrea wanted scriptures SO MUCH. She just finished the Book of Mormon a few weeks ago (she wanted to be done before her birthday) and as of right now she is just about done with the Pearl of Great Price as well. (She loves to read.)

She went to her best friend's birthday party on her birthday, which she was pretty excited about it, since she got sparkling fingers and toes from it--including a flower on her big toe. It was a great day for her!

Our October

Kara lost her two front teeth within days of each other. Now she is singing the song "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth..." nearly every day. Andrea was singing that same song last year! I can't believe how quickly they are growing up!

Since dad was out of town for Halloween, we painted pumpkins instead of carving, and the kids had a blast with that. Kara said that hers was "created"--it was cute to watch her try all different colors and things to get her own special pumpkin.

Once we convinced Ashley that Halloween is fun (she was very afraid of pumpkins a month ago), she decided to be Cinderella. Halloween is a HUGE event here in Arizona--it's like a big neighborhood block party! There was a haunted house, a movie playing on the garage, and everyone sits out front in lawn chairs to hand out candy. My kids loved it!

So Ashley turned two last month, and of course, we gave her a baby doll. She still loves it nearly a month later, and I love that she has "Ashley's baby" who she named Baby Dora. (No surprises there.) Maybe it will make mommy having a baby ok???

Fun with the kids

Just some fun moments we have had with each of our kids the past few weeks:
Andrea:
We enjoyed watching the BYU game on Saturday, probably more so because they won. But Andrea watched with us and learned a lot about football! There were a few moments that got intense so we told her she had to be quiet and not ask questions, but other than that, it was an enjoyable time. I guess we are breeding future BYU graduates early!
Kara:
I forgot to take first day of school pictures of my girls! I know, I am terrible! But Jason picked them up from school. When Kara came out, Jason picked her up and gave her a big hug. She said, "Put me down now, dad!" She looked mortified and checked all around her to make sure now one saw. "Don't ever do that again, dad." She was so embarrassed! She is only in 1st grade--don't we get a little more time than that?!?!
Tyler:
So we were driving to Jason's sister's house Sunday night to see her son open his mission call (he is going to Brazil). She lives about an hour away. Here is the conversation as we leave our house.
Tyler: "Do you have the map to get to her house?"
Jason: "It's all in my head."
Tyler: "What if you lose it?"
Mom: "Then we are all in trouble."
Dad didn't look very happy with mom's response, but we did get a laugh out of it. I love the things that kids say, especially when they don't even know they say it!
Ashley:
Finally, with Ashley, the other night at dinner, the other kids had finished and eaten everything on their plates. Ashley looked at them and then watched them clear their plates. She then tried to hand Jason a piece of her food. He didn't take it, so she put it on his plate. We watched her after that, and she put the remaining three pieces left on her plate onto Jason's plate. When she had successfully cleaned off her plate, she looked at us with a big smile and said, "All done!" Then went and put her plate in the sink too. I'm not sure we will let her get away with that again, but it sure struck us as funny. She is growing up so fast, and really just wants to be like her siblings.

Jason's Stitches

So last night Jason gets ready to go mountain biking after the kids get in bed, but he gashes open the side of his leg. It was really deep (I will spare you the gross details of that). It is obvious that it needs stitches, since it is 1 1/2 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. So he decides to stitch them up himself!!!! And he did. He was so proud he took a picture and I told him I would post a picture on the blog! My favorite thing that he said was "It is harder putting stitches in skin than in the mouth. Or maybe it was just because I was doing it on myself." I think it was because he didn't have anything to numb it with!

This is where the first copy of the Book of Mormon was published. We loved this site and my kids liked walking on the same floor that Joseph Smith walked.

This is in the sacred grove. Even though we don't know exactly where, it was a very neat experience for my kids.

Since I finally told my family when I saw them this past week, I figured I might as well officially announce that we are expecting baby #5 right before Christmas. We found out what we were having right before our big trip (I will post pictures later of our travels), but thought I would let you all know! I am now just over halfway, and have been less sick this pregnancy than any of the others! (Thankfully!) Now when I post pictures of our trip, you won't have to wonder about my belly.

I am not sure how she got it in her head, but Andrea begged me for a perm. So my sister-in-law and niece did the job for me, and Andrea is one happy girl. It turned out great, and she absolutely loves it! But I am still getting used to it--when did she grow up?

Recent pictures of the many faces of Ashley. She is growing up so much and learning new words and sentences every day. My favorite words to hear her say are "Sure", "Papa" (grandpa), and "Love you". She is so fun! (Most of the time.)

She has learned the words "princess" (the shoes) and "spiderman" (the goggles).

Tyler's aunts gave him some presents for the pool. She claimed them as her own almost immediately.

This was in the middle of a fit. There were a few other pictures with this one, but she looked so funny here to me.

This was when we celebrated Kara's birthday. This was before it was nap time when she was still happy and having fun.

Swine Flu

This past week we have been battling all the symptoms of swine flu, and it has wiped us out. Jason, Tyler, and I got hit the hardest, though all the kids got something. We had every single symptom of the swine flu (and there are quite a lot of symptoms). It has been a miserable week and a half, but we are finally recovering. I seem to be the last one to be able to get over it, but it hit me last. This picture is of Tyler. He had to go to the urgent care with Jason when Jason's virus spread to a bacterial infection and Tyler had labored breathing. We purchased a nebulizer so that he didn't have to go to the hospital. Today was his first day not having to use it, so he is one happy boy! I am just glad we are finally feeling better.

It's been a while...

I know it has been a while since I was on the blog. I could blame so many things--driving to Mesa a lot (an hour away) to see Jason's family, being called as YW president again, Jason being home four days a week (so I don't get much done), but I think it is really that we swim every single day. Now that it has been over 100 degrees for several weeks, I am tired of the heat, but loving the pool, as are my kids. They did lose it one day and we don't swim Sundays, but other than that, they get home from school and we get in. I now have three independent swimmers and one more that thinks she is independent (yes, that is a little scary). Ashley has grown up a lot! So here are a few random pictures of life the past few months, since I haven't posted anything.

Snow to swimming in February

Just a week and a half ago we drove up to snow, and today my kids braved the unheated pool in our yard. Hard to believe there is so much to do in Arizona in February!

I know it looks warm, but the water was freezing. I thought they were crazy! Andrea and Jason were the only ones who actually immersed themselves in the water. I thought Jason said it all when he said: "Once my feet went numb, the water didn't feel so cold."

Ashley liked it, especially when Jason took her to the deep end, but her skin was cold to the touch when I got her out!

I know they are smiling, but they are also shivering.

Here's just a couple pictures of the snow in Pinedale, AZ. The kids were SO excited to play in the snow again. We also stopped to see Jason's mom's grave. It was a nice day trip away from the heat of the valley and we enjoyed the day together.

Sandra Day O'Connor

The first graders at Andrea's school did "Tea at the White House" today. Each kid had to pick someone in American history, alive or dead. There was a lot of creativity! Andrea was Sandra Day O'Connor. Here she is with her teacher, who was Betsy Ross.

The 1st graders did a big presentation with memorized parts and lots of patriotic songs, including "God Bless America" and "Yankee Doodle". It was really amazing!

So on Sunday as we were getting ready for our 8 a.m. church, I got my scriptures in the case and put them by the stairs to take down. When it was time to go, I could not find them anywhere. So I went without them. When we got home, we had a conversation with the kids that went like this:

Mom: Do any of you know where my scriptures are?
3 kids in unison: No. I didn't take them.
Kara: Maybe Ashley took them. (She thinks Ashley does everything bad that happens in our
house--I know, she is just an easy scapegoat.)
Mom: I have a dollar for anyone that can find my scriptures.

Tyler (also running up the stairs): I am looking under Kara's bed!
Dad: I am betting that they are under Kara's bed.

Don't we just love our kids? Tyler didn't get the dollar, but he did manage to make his hiding my scriptures Ashley's fault. Amazing, isn't it?

Daddy Daughter Dinner and Dance

The girls' school had a daddy daughter dinner and dance. The girls were SO excited about. They got all dressed up and had me curl their hair and wore their favorite dresses. Dad even got them some tulips--that made their day even more. They had a great time--they each won a raffle prize that they were excited about. They are already talking about next year.

I finally took some photos of my kids. Here is Andrea and Ashley hanging out on the couch.

Tyler wanted to go to school with the girls. He wasn't ready, so this was his compromise. He didn't realize that his preschool doesn't start until the fall.

Kara had a rodeo day at school. The kindergartners really loved it. I think she liked dressing up for the day more than anything--she wore that hat for days afterwards.

Thinking about Arizona

I have been thinking a lot about some of the things I have observed in Arizona. I hope you don't mind my musing!!

1. I have never been in a place with so many personalized license plates! I thought perhaps they were free, but Jason said no way, since they have photo radar everywhere in attempts to raise money!

2. It is actually possible to have a Costco TOO close to your house. I think we have learned that the past few weeks (I feel like I have a love-hate relationship with that store!).

3. Warm winters are actually a really nice thing. I used to think winter grass and summer grass were the dumbest things ever, now I am all in favor of winter grass! My kids are outside every day, some days for hours. I am interested to see how the summer goes though...

4. I wonder who thought it was a good idea to landscape yards with cactus. We walk the girls to school everyday and I am a little tired of telling Tyler "Don't touch that!" Whoever had the idea, obviously didn't have multiple children under 5.

5. There is something to be said about multiple freeways! I love having options when driving across town! We can get to Mesa at least three different ways. I just remember hating the drive to Colorado Springs when we lived in Denver and to Salt Lake when we were at BYU.

I think that is all my musings for now. We really are enjoying Arizona, though we miss Denver a lot! There's an open invitation for friends and family to come stay with us! We'd love to see you!

House in Arizona

So here are a few pictures of our house in Arizona. Jason did a great job finding this one without me!! I love the covered cement patio in the back yard. Ashley and Tyler spend many hours with me back there when the girls are at school.

This has a part in the living room area meant for a formal dining. We got a table that was Jason's mom's so it was nice to be able to use it.

My girls love their purple room, fairy border and all.

The pool looks nice, but it is not heated. I hear we may be able to swim as early as March, but I am not sure I will want to get in myself! Funny conversation with Tyler:
Tyler: Can I go swimming now?
Dad: The pool isn't warm enough right now.
Tyler: How about in 20 minutes?
Dad: No, it isn't going to be warm enough to go swimming today.
Tyler: OK, we can go tomorrow then.
We finally took the kids out and let them put their feet in. The conversation went like this:
Dad: How does that feel kids? Do you think you could swim in that?
Tyler: Dad, it's cold!
Girls: It feels ok.
Mom: YEAH RIGHT!!

This is the kitchen and dining area. It is a pretty big area (much bigger than our house in Denver), and I like the little desk area by the fridge. I didn't post pictures of what Jason calls my "scrapbook room" (which really is our office), but my kids use Jason's old dental school laptop in the kitchen (at least they will once internet is hooked up there again).

....is my two front teeth. Andrea is very excited about losing her 2nd front tooth, so she has been singing that song all day long. She is sure growing up quickly. Kara was quite a little coach for her all day as she wiggled and twisted, but finally, she gave me one chance to pull it out, and I did it the first try (it did help that it was hanging by just the front). It has been a fun day at our house today!

We enjoyed the football game with Andrea. We were on the 2nd row, and we had a great time seeing some old friends from dental school. I think the game was more fun because we won, but it was our first game together since we have been married! (And we love BYU football, so I'm not sure how that happened!)

My first little baby is now 7 years old!! I can't even believe it! My brother and sister-in-law came over for dinner, cake, and presents. Andrea had a great day (though Ashley did not!). She is so grown up--I can't even believe she is so big! She talked all day about how next year she gets to be baptized! I was so proud of her!

Halloween

Here are our kids costumes this year. I think you can tell what they all are (Tyler is a monkey by his own choice, but the banana is probably the only way you can tell). The kids had a great week off of school and got to do a lot of trick-or-treating: first at the library, then the trunk or treat, the mall, and then the neighborhood. We gave out a lot of candy but ended up with way too much. I'm amazed at the haul that three kids can get.

Hike in the mountains

We spent Saturday in the mountains to enjoy the fall leaves and take a little hike with the kids! We took some pictures with our friends the Oxnam's while we were there. I loved the one of Jason carrying Tyler on his shoulders AND Ashley in the back pack. What a dad! At the end of the hike, we saw a lot of elk and took some pictures in front of them. The kids thought that was pretty cool, and Kara tried to see how close she could get to them. We may take another trip next weekend because Andrea didn't get any fishing in, but we'll see how the Colorado weather holds out.

1st Birthday for Ashley

Here is Ashley's first birthday. She was way too clean with her cake--we never even put a bib on her. But she enjoyed eating it and actually liked her presents more than the wrapping paper. I think that is a first for us with our kids turning one.

So we haven't been good about pictures in general, so this was Ashley's first photo shoot. I thought her hair looked really red in these pictures, but it was sure fun to watch her.

We haven't taken Tyler's picture since he was 9 months old, so a friend of mine took these for me of him. He did pretty well, and we liked what she did. I guess since he is 3 1/2, it was time for some more photos!

More fun with the Kids

Andrea and Kara were very excited to "match" after their cousins sent them these shirts.

Ashley loves oreos, though she mostly just eats the white part. It is one of the foods she actually gets excited about.

Tyler really does sleep with one eye open! And he is good at falling asleep anywhere.

Andrea lost her first top tooth, and she was pretty excited about it.

Kara continues to be silly and fun all the time. She sure loves to play with her brother and sisters.
